Entry Requirements:    

Grade B and above in GCSE English Literature and English Language

Introduction / Course Content:

Both the AS and A2 courses comprise of one exam module and a coursework module. Over the two years the course strives to encourage the enjoyment of literary texts, which include novels, plays and poetry.

The four units are as follows:

Year 12

  • Unit 1: Poetry and Prose 1800-1946 (exam: 60% marks).  This year we have been studying the poetry of W.B Yeats, and Charlotte Bronte’s novel Jane Eyre
  • Unit 2: Literature post 1900 (coursework: 40% marks).  Students study a range of texts to produce a coursework folder comprising of two tasks.  Some of the texts we have been studying this year include, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Great Gatsby and The Colour Purple.

Year 13

  • Unit 1: Drama and Poetry pre 1800 (exam: 30% of A Level). This unit is split into two sections.  Section A: Shakespeare.  Section B: Drama and poetry pre 1800.  There is a wide choice of texts available to study, including Hamlet, King Lear, Doctor Faustus, The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale and Paradise Lost.
  • Unit 2: Texts in Time (coursework: 20% of A Level).  Students are required to produce one extended essay of a maximum of 3000 words, covering three texts of their choice. The texts can be from any period or genre.
