Curriculum Intention:
The year 7 Italian curriculum intends to:
- Inspire learners with a strong cultural content.
- Enable learners to access authentic texts.
- Help learners develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the target language.
- Familiarise learners with Italian phonics and pronunciation.
- Introduce grammar in a progressive sequence, focusing on key verbs, adjectives and asking questions, thus preparing learners for the GCSE assessment objectives.
- Enable learners of all abilities to access content, with introductory quizzes at start of modules, combining and recycling of language at end of modules, differentiated class activities and homework.
- Expose learners with a wide range of visual, video, audio and print-based materials that help develop all skills and caters for all types of learners.
- Assess at different levels, including all four skills, translation as well as grammar.
- Enable learners to develop study skills, peer and self-assessment strategies, revision approaches and give opportunity to familiarise themselves with GCSE exam type questions.
- Encourage learners to use technology as a mean to consolidate and enhance MFL learning.

Year 8
Curriculum Intention:
The year 8 Italian curriculum intends to:
- Build on prior knowledge and develop understanding of grammar concepts in a progressive sequence, with a strong focus on verb tenses (past perfect/imperfect, future, modal verbs), time frame clues, adjectival agreement and placement (including irregular) and asking more complex questions in a variety of way.
- Inspire learners with a strong cultural content.
- Enable learners to access authentic and literary texts.
- Develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the target language.
- Strengthen and widen knowledge of French phonics, pronunciation with a focus on intonation.
- Enable learners of all abilities to access content, with introductory quizzes at start of modules, combining and recycling of language at end of modules, differentiated class activities and homework.
- Expose learners with a wide range of visual, video, audio and print-based materials that help develop all skills and cater for all types of learners.
- Assess at different levels, including all four skills, translation as well as grammar.

- Fast track learning so it is a viable option for students at GCSE.
- Give learners of all abilities, including native and near native speakers, an opportunity to develop their proficiency.
- Inspire learners with a strong cultural content.
- Introduce the Italian world to learners.
- Enable learners to access authentic texts.
- Help learners develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the target language

- Consolidate and build on prior grammatical and vocabulary knowledge acquired in MFL lessons at KS3.
- Promote extended and complex responses with a focus on accuracy.
- Provide depth of language knowledge and essential skills to access the GCSE materials including literary texts and audio materials.
- Build confidence in oracy skills (focus on spontaneous speech) to prepare for the globalised world of work.
- Promote curiosity, problem solving skills and deepen understanding of own culture and that of other countries.
- Give knowledge, understanding and skills to progress onto the next stage, irrespective of prior attainment, background or ethnicity.
- Equip with the knowledge and skills to achieve their best at GCSE.

- Inspire and engage through familiar and popular themes. Provides clear links to the most fundamental and interesting aspects of Italian culture.
- Provide a choice of literary texts and films- from contemporary to more classical titles, together with authentic source materials from Italy.
- To develop and assess spontaneity and grammar, as well as provide opportunities for students to apply their knowledge independently and creatively.
- Encourage students to develop ideas, use language to persuade and analyse, and give critical responses in their writing and speaking.
- Provide continuous progression and build on the understanding developed at Key Stage 4.
